Known as the ‘Round Isle’, La Gomera is one of the oldest and smallest of the Canary Islands. San Sebastian is the capital and main port of the island, set on the east coast and with a distinctly rural feel, with a few small plazas and colourful houses lining the hillside.

Interestingly, Ferrol's city centre is modelled on Lisbon in Portugal, a country with which it has strong historical and linguistic ties. The layout comprises of a rectangle lined with six parallel streets, with two squares on each side. We would probably never have gone there had it not been the starting point for the cruise. We intend to return when the weather is cooler (it was 42 degrees F in August) when I am sure we will enjoy it all the more.The restaurant was of a particularly highy standard.
